Natural Family Planning (NFP) utilizes a woman's fertile and infertile periods during her menstrual cycle to both achieve and avoid pregnancy. It is the only form of family planning approved by the Catholic church.
NFP:
- allows couples to grow in intimacy
- utilizes God's design for human sexuality
- is NOT the rhythm method
- is low cost or free to use
- has similar efficacy rates to hormonal contraception in avoiding pregnancy (see here)
- has no side effects and is 100% natural
- respects the dignity of the person.
- can be used by women with cycle irregularities or abnormalities
- is safe and able to be used postpartum, including in breastfeeding mothers
There are several different methods for couples to choose from. Each aligns with Catholic teaching and have varying levels of simplicity. All methods can be taught in person, through Skype or similar distance learning video services, and through online classes. Many instructors are willing to work with you if cost of instruction is a barrier. The Diocese of Salina provides several resources on NFP, as well as a list of area instructors.
The methods are as follows, and each has their own unique benefits:

Symptothermal Method (Couple to Couple League, SymptoPro)
